Eu and Me – Let’s Clean THe World” Environmental Activism Through Erasmus+ program opportunities in Cicala, Italy”

In an era where the impact of human activity on the environment has reached critical levels, a group of 40 passionate individuals from Italy, Serbia, Spain, Romania, Denmark, and Croatia embarked on a transformative journey in Cicala, Italy. This life-altering experience was made possible by Terra Mater Cicala, who organized an  enlightening Erasmus+ Youth Exchange, held from September 30th to October 7th, 2023.

Driven by the success of their previous project, “Cicala Plastic Free-Art!”, the main objective of this initiative was to further reduce waste production and encourage the social initiative of cleaning areas contaminated by waste and the upcycling the collected waste. The impact of their work reverberated through the local community, emphasizing the significance of collaborative action in combating environmental challenges.

Under the auspices of the European Union, the project highlighted how the Erasmus+ Program empowers young individuals, supporting their endeavors for education and environmental preservation. Through immersive activities and workshops, participants delved into the intricate web of environmental issues and innovative solutions, fostering a profound sense of responsibility and stewardship towards the planet.

The exchange program was tailored to meet several key objectives, including activating young people to champion environmental protection and fostering an acute understanding of the detrimental effects of waste overproduction and disposable materials. By nurturing creativity as a powerful tool for environmental advocacy, the program aimed to elevate the participants’ creative skills, equipping them with the necessary tools to drive positive change.

Integral to the program’s essence was the cultivation of intercultural dialogue and appreciation for cultural diversity. Participants were encouraged to embrace diverse perspectives and recognize the interconnectedness of global environmental goals. Through non-formal education, the project strived to enhance the participants’ key competencies, ultimately culminating in the certification of their achievements through the Youthpass Certificate.

As the participants return to their respective communities and sending NGOs, the ripple effects of their experiences will continue to reverberate. Armed with a heightened awareness of sustainable practices and a profound commitment to environmental stewardship, these young activists are poised to effect transformative change within their spheres of influence. Their journey in Cicala, Italy, stands as a beacon of hope, igniting a collective spirit of environmental consciousness and inspiring communities to embrace green practices for a sustainable future.

“Eu and Me – Let’s Clean the World!” serves as an exemplar of how collaborative action and youth-led initiatives can pave the way for a greener, more sustainable world. Through their unwavering dedication and shared vision, the participants have set a powerful precedent for global environmental activism, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of environmental conservation and youth empowerment. This success was made possible through the invaluable support of the Italian Agenzia Giovani and all the partners, whose intensive efforts contributed to the resounding success of this mobility.
